Poetry Springs from Pain
as from the mare’s neck springs her mane.
Poetry bursts from pain
as from the dark clouds bursts the rain.
Poetry grows from pain
as sweet, sweet sugar grows from cane.

When our lives are torn apart
and the darkness claims our heart
We must seek an orderly way
to express our pain each day .

We must make the words stand still,
We must make them do our will.

2.
We must make them beat and rhyme-
Like the bells, they must chime.
They must speak of pain and sorrow
of yesterday’s loss- fear of tomorrow.

Somehow we must make the words all fit
We must make neat stitches as we knit.
We must control some thing today-
We must make the chaos go away.
We cannot save our child from death-
We cannot give to her our breath-
we cannot bring her back to us
we cannot smile-just sob and fuss.
And so we turn to words- our slaves-
As we mourn- by their graves.

Poetry springs from pain,
As from the mare’s neck springs her mane.
